Choosing a password manager is easier with a short, honest checklist than with feature-count scorecards. Focus on encryption clarity, platforms you actually use, free limits, sync trust model, and recovery. This guide is vendor-aware but not fear-based — and it explains where AzAd Vault fits.
1. Cryptography you can name
Prefer documented KDFs and ciphers. AzAd Vault uses Argon2id and AES-256-GCM on device. Ask whether the vendor can read vault contents. Read Argon2id vs PBKDF2 if you want the trade-offs. Marketing adjectives without algorithm names are a yellow flag.
2. Platforms you open every day
List your devices. AzAd Vault ships Android (Play), Windows desktop, and a Chrome extension. There is no iOS/macOS client as of September 2026. If you need Linux or a full web vault, compare alternatives on our compare hub. A smaller platform set done carefully beats a sprawling matrix you never open.
3. Free tier honesty
Concrete caps beat vague “free forever.” AzAd Vault Free includes 500 items, 20 labels, and 10 TOTP codes, with autofill, encrypted attachments, backup history, and scheduled backups on supported apps. Premium via Google Play unlocks unlimited items/labels/TOTP, Chrome passkeys, Archive, and up to six family seats. Android autofill and attachments are not Premium-gated.
4. Sync and offline
Decide if sync is optional. AzAd Vault works offline; Drive sync stores ciphertext in your app folder. There is no multi-vault product mode and no “priority sync” cryptography. Family sharing means Premium seats — each person keeps a private vault.
5. Import, MFA, and recovery
Check import paths (Chrome CSV, Bitwarden, and others on Android/Windows; CSV/Bitwarden on Chrome). Prefer TOTP in-vault and passkeys where offered (Chrome Premium for AzAd Vault passkeys; not Android WebAuthn). Confirm you understand master-password recovery limits before you migrate everything.
Soft next step: install Free from download, import a CSV of non-critical logins first, and skim security. Compare specific rivals when you need them — for example vs Bitwarden or vs 1Password.
6. Pricing model fit
Subscription fatigue is real. AzAd Vault’s Free tier is designed to be usable long-term within caps. Premium bills through Google Play so Android households already know the payment surface; Windows and Chrome read entitlements after Google sign-in. If you refuse Play Billing on principle, this product’s Premium path may not fit — and that is an honest reason to compare elsewhere.
7. Support and documentation
Prefer products with a security page, FAQ, changelog, and reachable support email. AzAd Vault publishes those at azadvault.com, including this blog, a glossary, and release highlights. Chat volume is not a substitute for clear recovery documentation.
8. Trial plan without burning weekends
Install Free. Import twenty non-critical logins. Enable autofill on one platform. Generate one new password with the in-app or web generator. If friction is low, continue. If you need iOS tomorrow, shortlist other apps instead of waiting for platforms AzAd Vault does not ship yet.
Decision rule: match platforms + encryption clarity + free honesty first; chase niche features second. Most abandoned managers fail on daily friction, not missing enterprise SAML.
Red flags worth walking away from
Avoid products that require you to email plaintext exports to support, that cannot explain encryption in plain language, or that lock Free tiers to a single device without saying so upfront. Be wary of sensational breach content that only sells fear. Prefer calm checklists like this one.
Also avoid assuming “open source” or “closed source” alone decides safety. Implementation quality, update cadence, and UX that encourages unique passwords matter enormously. AzAd Vault is not marketed as a fully open-source product; we compete on clarity, platforms we ship, and zero-knowledge design.
Scorecard you can copy
Write four columns: Platforms I need, Encryption named?, Free limits clear?, Sync optional/ciphertext? Score AzAd Vault and two alternatives the same afternoon. If a vendor cannot fill the encryption cell, drop them early.
Revisit the scorecard after a one-week trial. Friction beats brochure features. AzAd Vault should feel calm on the devices you already own — Android, Windows, Chrome.
AzAd Vault keeps the same zero-knowledge posture whether you are on Free or Premium: Argon2id and AES-256-GCM on device, optional Google Drive ciphertext sync, and no multi-vault sharing model. Premium via Google Play raises limits and unlocks Chrome passkeys, Archive, and family seats — it does not invent a separate “priority sync” cryptography track. Android does not ship WebAuthn passkey create/sign-in as of September 2026; use Chrome Premium for passkeys. For algorithms and product boundaries, see the security overview and glossary.
